Our Programs
Dig It!
Funded by a $15,000 grant from the Junior League of Martin County, the collaborative effort between the Children’s Museum, the Junior League and the Southeast Florida Archaeological Society has resulted in a distinctive, “in-school” outreach program, where children rotate between six learning stations. This interactive program complies with the Florida Sunshine State Standards for fourth grade.
Activities include:
-
Assembly- Students will meet Jonathan Dickinson and an Ais Cacique (Indian Chief) to understand why we have a limited understanding about the way the ancient Indians lived.
-
Archaeological Dig- Designed and operated by SEFAS volunteers, this “mock” dig site allows children to uncover artifacts and natural items from the Ais civilization.
-
Shells-Students will discover ways in which the Indians used shells for tools, containers and ornamentation. The students will craft shell necklaces and gain a greater understanding of the use of natural resources.
-
Clay Pots- Students will examine pottery shards and discuss the evolution of pot making while making their own utensils out of clay.
-
Moon Dance- Students will view a life-size, three dimensional Indian Chief and hear excerpts from Jonathan Dickinson’s journal to learn more about the moon dance ritual and the Ais culture.
-
Maps- Students will inspect a recreated, historic Florida map representing Dickinson’s time to compare modern day landmarks and measure the length of a “league” to a mile.

We Can!
Through a partnership with the Martin County Health Department the Children’s Museum will be promoting and implementing the “We Can” program. We Can! Is a new public education program designed to help children 8-13 years old to stay at a healthy weight through improving food choices, increasing physical activity and reducing screen time. The program is a collaboration of four Institutes of the national Institutes of Health (NIH).
